The Song of Songs

a poem set to music in the Middle Ages

This programme has been created around texts from the Song of Songs that have been set to music by medieval composers between the xith and xvth centuries. In the Middle Ages, the love which unites two lovers or husband and wife, as celebrated in the Song of Songs, was conceived as the mystical love which was thought to exist between God and the human soul or between Christ and the Church.
